Ohio: An Economy that Works January 2007A report by Amy Hanauer, Policy Matters Ohio
In this report, Policy Matters makes recommendations for how Ohio can create an economy that works for all its citizens. While the full report is well-written and researched, we want to highlight two aspects that we find particularly good examples of using the Talking about Government research findings.
First, the report has an aspirational tone. It reflects on past accomplishments and offers hope about the future possibilities for making Ohio’s economy work better for everyone. Our research documented that this tone—one of hope and aspiration—is more effective than telling stories of crisis.
Secondly, the report discusses the importance of having strong public structures to undergird Ohio’s success and how these structures have allowed young Ohioans to “become educated, health problems to be managed, infrastructure to develop and business to thrive.” The author, Amy Hanauer, uses this same public structures concept to argue that the public sector -– rather than the private sector -- is the most efficient and best mechanism for delivering public goods.
